Valery Michailowitsch Chalilow ( Russian Валерий Михайлович Халилов ; born January 30, 1952 in Termiz , Uzbek SSR ; †  December 25, 2016 near Sochi , Russia ) was a Russian conductor, composer and folk artist of Russia . He was the head of the Alexandrov Ensemble and was killed in the crash of a Tupolev Tu-154 .

Life

From 1970 to 1975 he trained as a military bandmaster at the Moscow Conservatory . From 2002 until his death he was chief conductor of the military orchestra of the Russian Armed Forces , with which he initiated the annual Victory Day parade on Red Square with the song The Holy War . With this ensemble he went on numerous tours abroad, including to Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, Finland, France, Poland, Sweden, USA, Mongolia and North Korea. In April 2016 he was appointed head of the Alexandrov Ensemble with the rank of lieutenant general . As a composer, Chalilov wrote several marches for wind orchestra , romances and songs. He died in the crash of a plane belonging to the Russian Defense Ministry, which was en route to Syria with almost all members of the Alexandrov Ensemble from Sochi . His successor as head was Colonel Gennady Ksenafontowitsch Sachsenyuk.
