The Alexandrov Ensemble (actually Russian Дважды краснознаменный академический ансамбль песни и пляски Российской армии имени А. В. Александрова Dvaždy krasnoznamennyj akademičeskij ansambl 'pesni i pljaski Rossijskoj armii imeni AV Alexandrova , German , dual with the Red Banner excellent Academic Song and Dance Ensemble of Russian Army "AW Alexandrow" ' ) is a soldiers' choir from Russia , which was founded on October 12, 1928 in Moscow by Alexander Alexandrow , the later composer of the national anthem of the Soviet Union (now the official national anthem of Russia ). In a plane crash on December 25, 2016 , 64 members of the ensemble died. It is also known as the " Red Army Choir ".

history

The choir initially consisted of twelve soldiers (eight singers, two dancers and one bayan (accordion) player and reciter each ). In 1937 the ensemble received the "Grand Prix" at the Paris World Exhibition .

On August 18, 1948, the Alexandrow Ensemble sparked enthusiasm with its appearance on the Berlin Gendarmenmarkt . The poet Kurt Barthel said in one of his books that in preparation for their tour through the Soviet zone of occupation , the ensemble asked German communists in Moscow which German song they should perform, after which they were advised to sing the folk song in the most beautiful meadow .

From 1946 to 1987 the ensemble was directed by Alexander Alexandrov's son, Major General Boris Alexandrow .

Even after the end of the Soviet Union , the ensemble performed at home and abroad. The collaboration with the Finnish Leningrad Cowboys , with whom they even went on tour and performed Kalinka , became known in Western Europe .

Before the plane crash, the ensemble consisted of 186 members, including the male choir (with 9 soloists), the orchestra and a dance group . The repertoire ranges from Russian folk songs to hymns and opera arias to modern pieces.

On February 16, 2017, the ensemble appeared again in Moscow for the first time with a new line-up. The new head is Colonel Gennady Xenafontowitsch Satschenjuk.

Plane crash in December 2016

In the plane crash on December 25, 2016, a Tu-154 belonging to the Russian Defense Ministry crashed over the Black Sea with no survivors. On board were 64 singers, instrumentalists and dancers from the Alexandrow Ensemble, who were supposed to give a New Year's concert on the Russian military airfield Hmeimim in Syria. Except for 3 people, all choir members were on board, including the conductor Lieutenant General Valeri Chalilow . Only the soloist Vadim Petrovich Ananyev survived because he was on leave because of the birth of his third son.

  2. Berliner Zeitung , August 20, 1948, Volume 4 / Issue 193 / Page 1. There is often false talk of a concert by the ensemble in Berlin in 1946, after which Alexander Alexandrow is said to have died. In the press of that time, however, there is no evidence of such an appearance ( Berliner Zeitung , Neues Deutschland ). In fact, in 1946, Alexander Alexandrow was on a journey that made him a. a. led to Berlin and on which he died on July 8, 1946. However, this trip was not associated with a performance by the ensemble in Berlin.
