Family and education

Kobson came from a Jewish family and grew up in simple circumstances in the Donets Basin . During the Second World War, the family was evacuated to Jangijul near Tashkent in Uzbekistan because of their Jewish origins . Kobson's father fought in the Red Army, was badly wounded in 1943 and treated in Moscow. There he met another woman and did not return to his family after the war.

The young Iossif and his mother moved back to the Ukraine in 1944, where they settled in Kramatorsk . There he practiced in his youth to the sport of boxing , and later studied mining engineering at the University in Dnepropetrovsk .

After his military service, he completed musical training at the Gnessin Institute in Moscow from 1958 to 1962 . In the following decades the baritone became one of the most popular singers in the Soviet Union .

In 1983 Kobson was accused of performing Jewish songs at an official event, and he was expelled from the CPSU , but soon afterwards rehabilitated. Even after the collapse of the Soviet Union , Kobson successfully continued his career in Russia.

Political and social engagement

Kobson was chairman of the public relations committee of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia and a member of the ruling United Russia party . Kobson had been a member of the Duma since 1997 .

Kobson 2012 with Putin

Kobson has been referred to repeatedly as the "Russian Frank Sinatra ". The characterization related partly to his level of awareness or his singing style , but occasionally also to his alleged contacts to organized crime. In 1995 his visa for the USA was revoked for this reason. Kobson was considered a close confidante of the former Moscow mayor Yuri Luzhkov .

During the hostage-taking in Moscow's Dubrovka Theater in 2002, Kobson went to negotiations with the hostage-takers, and in the process brought a woman and three children out of the building.

Kobson, whose family roots lie in the Donetsk region, has repeatedly publicly expressed his support for the so-called People 's Republics of Lugansk and Donetsk , which were proclaimed during the war in Ukraine in 2014 , and pretended to be the Moscow “honorary consul” of the latter. He was involved in the organization of Russian "aid convoys" and appeared several times in Donetsk together with separatist leader Alexander Sakharchenko . Through this, he was naturalized in its People's Republic in 2016.

In addition to his commitment to the idea of a “ New Russia ”, Kobson was a prominent proponent of the Russian annexation of Crimea . As a result, he was banned from entering Ukraine and Latvia in 2014 , and in February 2015 he was included in an expanded sanctions list of the European Union , which he ostensibly welcomed. Nonetheless , through the advocacy of Vladimir Putin , Kobson, who had prostate cancer , managed to obtain an entry permit into the member states of the European Union for medical treatment.

Honors

During his career, Kobson received many state awards, including the State Prize of the USSR and the People's Artist of the USSR Award . In December 1991 he was also honored as People's Artist of Ukraine . In 2012 he was awarded the Order of Merit for the Fatherland 1st Class. In April 2016, he was awarded the title Hero of Labor of the Russian Federation .
