Kramatorsk ( Ukrainian Краматорськ ; Russian Краматорск Kramatorsk ) is a city with about 160,000 inhabitants (2016) in Donetsk Oblast in eastern Ukraine . It is the administrative center of the Ukrainian-controlled parts of Donetsk Oblast and is completely enclosed by the Sloviansk district . Kramatorsk is a center of engineering and jewelry industries.
geography
Kramatorsk is located on the banks of the Kasennyj Torez , a tributary of the Siverskyi Donets , in the north of Donetsk Oblast. The N 20 trunk road runs through the city in a north-south direction .
The municipality Kramatorsk divided next to the city proper in the nine settlements of urban type Bilenke , Komyschuwacha , Krasnotorka , Malotaraniwka , Oleksandriwka , Sofijiwka , Schabelkiwka , Yasna Polyana and Jasnohirka , the two villages Pryvillia (Привілля) and Semenivka (Семенівка) and in the 2 Selyschtsche (settlements) Ashurkowe (Ашуркове) and Wassyliwska Pustosch (Василівська Пустош).
history
Kramatorsk was founded in 1868 as a railway station. Since the end of the 19th century, Kramatorsk has developed into an important industrial center, especially the mechanical engineering industry.In 1937, the Kramatorsk tram , which existed until August 1, 2017, was opened.
In the city there was the prisoner of war camp 217 for German prisoners of war of the Second World War . The Friedrich Krupp AG operating here the "New Maschinenfabrik Kramatorsk".
During the Cold War, several Soviet MiG-23P and 39 Su-15TM interceptors were located on the military airfield 6 km southeast of Kramatorsk with a runway of 2500 m until 1991 .
Since October 13, 2014, Kramatorsk has been the administrative center for the Ukrainian-controlled parts of Donetsk Oblast.
Because of its high number of contract killings, Kramatorsk is also known as the "Chicago of Ukraine".
