Schdaniwka ( Ukrainian Жданівка ; Russian Ждановка Schdanowka ) is a small town in eastern Ukraine with 12,392 inhabitants (2019).
geography
The city is located on the southern slope of the watershed of the Donetsk Basin in Donetsk Oblast 37 km northeast of the Donetsk Oblast center and 30 km southeast of Horlivka . The urban area covers only 2 km², of which 72% are built over. The municipality also includes the urban-type Vilchivka and the village of Molodyj Shakhtar (Ukrainian Молодий Шахтар ) with about 100 residents.
The climate is temperate continental . The average temperature is −7.2 ° C in January, the coldest month, and 22 ° C in the warmest month, July. During the year 500 mm of precipitation falls.
history
The present city was founded due to the development of coal mining in the region as a settlement called Novo-Schdaniwka (Ukrainian Ново-Жданівка ) in 1926. The village got its current name in 1959 and the status of a town was given to Schdaniwka in 1966. Since 1992 the city has been a city of regional importance.
The city has been under the control of the internationally unrecognized Donetsk People's Republic since 2014 and, according to the Ukrainian government, belongs to an area in which the organs of state power temporarily do not exercise their powers.
