Novoazovsk ( Ukrainian Новоазовськ ; Russian Новоазовск Novoazovsk ) is a city in eastern Ukraine in Donetsk Oblast with 11,300 inhabitants (2019). The city is the administrative seat of Novoazovsk Raion .
geography
Novoasovsk is located at the mouth of the Hruskyj Jalantschyk (Ukrainian Грузький Яланчик ) in the Sea of Azov 112 km south of the Donetsk Oblast center and 42 km east of Mariupol . The city is located on the M 14 trunk road between Mariupol and the Russian city of Taganrog, 70 km away .
In addition to the city itself, the municipality also includes the villages
- Husselschtschykowe (Ukrainian Гусельщикове ) with about 630 inhabitants,
- Kosliwka (Ukrainian Козлівка ) with about 110 inhabitants as well
- Samsonowe (Ukrainian Самсонове ) with about 380 inhabitants.
history
The settlement was founded in 1849 and ten years later already had 885 residents. Its location at the crossroads of land and sea routes has helped the place become a trading center . A port with shops and warehouses was created, so that in 1914 7,900 people lived here. Until 1923 the place was called Novomykolajiwska (Ukrainian Новомиколаївська ) and from 1923 to 1959 Budjoniwka (Ukrainian Будьонівка ). From 1938 the village was an urban-type settlement and in 1966 Novoazovsk received the status of a city.
Ukraine war
From mid-April 2014, pro-Russian militias occupied several cities in Donetsk Oblast. including Novoazovsk. In June 2014, Ukrainian forces liberated the city from the militia, after which the situation around the city became relatively calm. On August 25, 2014, Ukraine announced that Russian soldiers disguised as pro-Russian separatists had opened a new front and launched an offensive against Mariupol . On August 28, the Ukrainian Security Council announced that Ukraine had largely lost power in the south-east of the country to Russian military, including over Novoasovsk and the surrounding community.
