Wuhledar ( Ukrainian Вугледар ; Russian Угледар Ugledar ) is a city of regional importance in the southwest of the Ukrainian Donetsk Oblast with 14,755 inhabitants (2019).

The city, which mainly lives from coal mining, is located in the Donbass km southwest of the 60 Oblastzentrum Donetsk . It is enclosed in the southeast by Wolnovacha district and in the northwest by Marjinka district .

history

Founded at the beginning of the development of the southern Donets Basin in 1964 with the name of Piwdennyj Donetsk (Ukrainian Південний Донецьк ), the city was planned as an important industrial city with a population of one hundred thousand inhabitants and more than ten mines. After the development of the coal deposits in the southern Donets Basin was assessed as less promising than in the Kuzbass in the 1970s, only a smaller town emerged. In 1969 the settlement was renamed Wuhledar. In 1991 Wuhledar received city status.

According to the 2001 census, 63.1% of the urban population were Ukrainian and 33.1% Russian .
