Avdiivka was founded in the middle of the 18th century, making it one of the oldest towns in the Donets Basin . In 1956 Avdiivka received town charter. The Avdiivka tram has been operating in the city since 1965 .
In the course of the war in Ukraine since 2014 , there are often clashes in the city. On July 30, 2014, the Ukrainian Army reportedly succeeded in driving the pro-Russian separatists out of the town. In April 2016, pro-Russian separatists tried again to conquer an industrial district on the outskirts of Avdiivka, and at the end of January 2017 positions of the Ukrainian army. Both sides fired heavy weapons at each other during the escalation in January 2017, killing several civilians and combatants. After several civilians were killed by artillery fire by pro-Russian fighters in Avdiivka in late January and early February, the Ukrainian authorities evacuated around half of the 35,000 residents, the rest initially wanted to stay.
