Karlo-Marxowe ( Ukrainian Карло-Марксове - Ukrainian officially since May 12, 2016 Софіївка Sofijiwka /; Russian Карло-Марксово Karlo-Marxowo ) is an urban-type settlement in eastern Ukraine in the Donetsk Oblast (2015) with about 10,000 inhabitants.

The namesake of the village Karl Marx

The settlement is named after Karl Marx , the German philosopher and theorist of socialism and communism .

geography

The settlement is located in the Donets Basin, 42 km north of the Donetsk Oblast Center and 8 km northwest of the center of Jenakijewe , to whose urban district it belongs. The center of Horliwka is 14 km northwest of the village. Locally past leading highway M 04 / E 50 .

The settlement council of Karlo-Marxowe also includes the village Novoseliwka (Ukrainian Новоселівка ) with about 160 inhabitants and the settlement Staropetriwske (Ukrainian Старопетрівське ) with about 480 inhabitants.

history

The settlement was founded in 1783 and was named Sofijiwka (Ukrainian Софіївка ). The first coal mine was opened in the village in 1858 and Karlo-Marxowe has been an urban-type settlement since 1940. Until 1924 the place was called Sofijiwskyj Rudnyk and then until 1965 the name Imeni Karla Marxa ("Name of Karl Marx"). From November 1941 to September 1943 the place was occupied by Wehrmacht troops. During the war in Ukraine , the place has been occupied by separatists from the Donetsk People's Republic since summer 2014 .
