history

Founded in 1875 as Grischino ( Гришино ), the settlement was renamed Postyshevo ( Постышево ) in honor of the politician Pavel Postyshev in 1934 . In 1938, the previous namesake Postyshev had fallen out of favor, arrested and shot, the name was changed to Красноармейское Krasnoarmejskoje (Ukrainian Красноармійськ Krasnoarmiysk - “City of the Red Army”) and at the same time the town was granted city rights.

The city was occupied by the Wehrmacht on October 21, 1941 during World War II . In February 1943 there was a 12-day battle for the city. On the night of February 10-11, 1943, Krasnoarmiysk was occupied by the Soviet 4th Guard Panzer Corps. After the reconquest by the 5th SS Panzer Division "Wiking" with the support of the 333rd Infantry and the 7th Panzer Division , numerous dead were discovered on February 18, 1943, showing mutilations and traces of abuse.

On February 23, 1943, the city was again completely under German control until the final liberation by the Red Army on September 8, 1943. Since January 1963 the city has been under oblast administration. On May 12, 2016, as part of decommunization in Ukraine, the name was changed to Pokrovsk.
