Novohrodiwka ( Ukrainian Новогродівка ; Russian Новогродовка Novogrodowka ) is a small mining town in eastern Ukraine with 14,615 inhabitants (2019).

geography

The city is located in the Donets Basin in the Donetsk Oblast 45 km northwest of the Donetsk Oblast center and is a neighboring city of Selydowe , to whose municipality it belonged until 1992. The M 04 trunk road , part of the European route 50, runs between the two cities .

history

The present city was founded as a settlement called Hrodiwka (Ukrainian Гродівка) in 1939 in connection with the construction of the coal mine "Nowohrodowska". On September 3, 1943, the city was liberated from the occupation of the Wehrmacht . The city received its current name and status in 1958. In 1992 the city, which until then was subordinate to the Krasnoarmiysk Rajon within the municipality of Selydowe , was placed under direct oblast administration.
