Piwdenne (Ukrainian Південне ; Russian Пивденное / Piwdennoje ) is a small town in Donetsk Oblast in eastern Ukraine with about 1,500 inhabitants.
The place belongs to the municipality of Salisne which in turn is part of the municipality of Torezk , around the place large coal mines extend.
It is located in the western Donets Basin about 9 kilometers southeast of the city center of Torezk and 43 kilometers north of the Donetsk Oblast Center.
Piwdenne was originally called Tschigari (Russian Чигари) and received the status of an urban-type settlement in 1957. It was then renamed Leninske (Ukrainian Ленінське; Russian Ленинское / Leninskoje ).
During the Ukraine War , the city was shelled by separatists in December 2014, causing some destruction and death in the town, which is located directly on the line of battle between the Ukrainian army and the separatists. On May 19, 2016, the place was renamed Piwdenne in the course of the decommunization of Ukraine .
