Torezk ( Ukrainian Торецьк ; Russian Торецк Torezk ) is a city of regional importance in eastern Ukraine with 33,864 inhabitants (2016). The city is located in the Donets Basin in Donetsk Oblast, 50 km north of the Donetsk Oblast center .
As in most cities in Donbass , the coal industry plays a leading role in the city's economy (with 50.9% of total industrial production (September 1, 2008)).
history
Founded in 1806 as Shcherbinovka (from Russian: Щербиновка) or Shcherbynivka ( Ukrainian Щербинівка), from 1938 on Torezk was called Dzerzhynsk and had the status of a city. The name Dzerzhynsk is derived from the Bolshevik professional revolutionary Felix Dzerzhinsky (1877-1926). Due to the decommunization laws , the city had to be renamed. The city council voted for the name Torezk. This request was followed and the city was renamed from the former Dzerzhynsk ( ukr. Дзержинськ ) effective February 4, 2016 .
The city was occupied by troops of the German Wehrmacht from October 28, 1941 to September 5, 1943 .

The Ukrainian language is used, according to the 2001 census of 21.29% of the population, the Russian language by 78.23%. The population of the city at that time consisted of 60.5% Ukrainians , 36.4% Russians , 1% Belarusians , 0.8% Tatars , 0.3% Roma and one percent from another 63 ethnic groups.
In 2001 the city still had 43,371 and the municipality 87,024 inhabitants, today it has only 35,595 and the municipality 73,537 inhabitants. This makes the population decline in Torezk one of the highest in Ukraine. While the birth rate is 6.6 per 1,000 people, the death rate is 18.8. Thus the natural population loss is 12.2. The migration balance is also negative (−8.2 per 1,000).
