history
In 1858 an experimental metal works was opened in place of the town. In 1895, a large Petrovsky metallurgical combine was founded, and the associated workers' settlement was named Jenakieve in 1898 in honor of one of the company's founders . In 1925 the settlement received city rights, from 1923 to 1936 the city was called Rykowo and 1936–1944 Ordzhonikidze (in honor of the Soviet officials Alexei Ivanovich Rykow and Grigory Konstantinovich Ordzhonikidze ). In 1932, the Jenakieve tram, which still operates today, was opened in the city . From November 1, 1941 to September 3, 1943 , the city was occupied by Wehrmacht troops.
On September 16, 1979, in the interest of the national economy of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, an underground nuclear explosion with a strength of 0.3 kt at a depth of 903 occurred in the coal mine "Yuny Communar" (also "Junij Komunar") (object "Klivazh") Meters between the seams. With the nuclear explosion of VNIPIPROMTechnology (today at Rosatom ) the tension in the rock mass should be reduced, which should ultimately improve the safety of coal mining. In 2002 the mine was closed. Environmentalists see a danger for the groundwater which can be radioactive. Pumps convey water from the disused mine. In 2018 it was warned that there was a risk that the pit could soon overflow.
In the summer of 2014 there was fighting in the area during the war in Ukraine , which has since been in the hands of the separatists of the Donetsk People's Republic .
