Wuhlehirsk (Ukrainian Вуглегірськ ; Russian Углегорск / Uglegorsk ) is a city in the Donetsk Oblast in Ukraine with about 7500 inhabitants (2017). The city is located about 49 kilometers northeast of the Oblast capital Donetsk in the Bachmut district .
The municipalities also include the settlements Bulawyne (Булавине), Hrosne (Грозне), Kajutyne (Каютине), Stupakowe (Ступакове), and Saweliwka (Савелівка).
Wuhlehirsk was founded in 1879 as Chazapetiwka (Хацапетівка) in the course of the construction of a railway line and carried this name until 1958, when it was also elevated to a city. Today the city lives from coal mining and coal processing. From 1958 to 1980 the tram ran in the village , from 1982 to 2014 trolleybuses operated .
On December 11, 2014, the city was spun off from the urban district of Yenakieve and joined the Artemivsk Raion (today's Bachmut Raion). During the battle for Debaltseve in the war in Ukraine , the city was largely destroyed in early 2015 and has been under the control of pro-Russian rebels since February 2015.
