Charles Monselet (born April 30, 1825 in Nantes , Loire-Atlantique department , † March 18, 1888 in Paris ) was a French writer, journalist, poet and librettist. Together with his colleagues Léon Brisse called Baron Brisse, Alexandre Balthazar Laurent Grimod de la Reynière and Joseph Favre , Monselet was one of the first gastronomic critics in France.

life and work

Monselet worked as a columnist for Figaro , the Journal du Matin , for Pays and Monde Illustré . He became known as an ironic portraitist of his contemporaries and earned the reputation of roi des gastronomes with works such as the six-volume Almanach des gourmands and the Lettres gourmandes , the Ode au Cochon and the Sonnet de l'asperge . In 1858 he founded the weekly Le Gourmet , for which he worked as a journalist.

In works such as Les Ruines de Paris and Figures parisiennes , he introduced the Paris of his time, and his Lorgnette Littéraire (1857) is considered a unique testimony to the Parisian literary scene of the 19th century. He wrote novels and short stories, parodies and pastiches, poems, reviews and plays, and was an important librettist.

Charles Monselet died shortly before his 63rd birthday on March 18, 1888 in Paris and his final resting place was in the Père Lachaise cemetery (Division 66). The sculptor Charles-Auguste Lebourg (1829–1906) designed a relief with Monselet's portrait, with which on June 26, 1904 his tombstone was solemnly decorated.
