Marjinka ( Ukrainian Мар'їнка ; Russian Марьинка Marjinka ) is a small town in Donetsk Oblast in eastern Ukraine with about 9400 inhabitants (2019). The city is the administrative seat of the Rajons of the same name .

Marinka is located in the southern Donbass km south-west from the 27 Oblastzentrum Donetsk on the trunk road N 15 .

The municipality, which has an area of ​​51.92 km², includes the town itself and the village of Pobjeda (Ukrainian Побєда ) with 144 inhabitants.

history

The city was founded in 1844 and received urban-type settlement status in 1938. During the Second World War , Marjinka was occupied by the Wehrmacht on October 19, 1941 and liberated by the Red Army on September 9, 1943 . Marjinka has had city status since 1977.

In the war in Ukraine that began in 2014 , the city was heavily contested between government soldiers and rebels from the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic and has been under the control of the Ukrainian government since June 2015 after an operation by Ukrainian troops under Colonel Mychajlo Sabrodskyj .
