Ilowajsk ( Ukrainian Іловайськ ; Russian Иловайск Ilowajsk ) is a city in Donetsk Oblast in eastern Ukraine . Administratively it belongs to the municipality of Kharzysk .

The place arose after the construction of a railway line at the end of the 19th century, the name derives from the Russian noble family Ilowaiski .

The town of Ilovajsk, which received town charter in 1938, also includes the village of Tretyaky ( Третяки ) and the settlement of Vynohradne ( Виноградне ). The city has a marshalling yard of the Donetska Zaliznytsia on the Dolja – Debaltseve railway line . In 2014, however, the station was shut down until further notice due to the cessation of local rail operations due to the state of war .

Between August 10th and 2nd / 3rd September 2014 led to the battle of Ilovajsk between Ukrainian troops loyal to the government and separatists , as a result of which, according to various sources, between 270 and more than 1,300 people were killed on both sides. The Weltspiegel reported from the cauldron and about the escape from Ilowajsk.
