February 2017 in Makiivka , Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine ), also Giwi (Ги́ви), was a high-ranking Ukrainian militia leader in the Ukraine war . He led the "Somalia Battalion" (Russian: Батальон Сомали ).

Life

Michail Tolstych was born in 1980 in Ilowajsk, Ukraine, in Donetsk Oblast. According to his own statements, he had some Georgian roots, but identified himself as a Russian . His battle name "Giwi" is an allusion to his partly Georgian ancestry.

According to his own information, Tolstych served in the Ukrainian army as a tank driver from 1998 to 2000 and then worked as a factory worker.

Tolstych, who comes from Ilowajsk, joined the pro-Russian rebels in May 2014 and fought against the Ukrainian army in Slovyansk , among other places . He rose in the ranks of the separatists and was already acting as a commander in the battle for Ilovajsk in summer 2014 . A high-ranking separatist officer is said to have exclaimed after a battle under the impression of the sight of corpses and burned tanks: "Giwi's people are more vicious than Somali pirates !" This led to the naming of his unit as the "Somali Battalion".

While Ukrainian authorities and the mass media dubbed him a " terrorist " and a mercenary , "Giwi" enjoyed great popularity among supporters of pro-Russian rebels and was sometimes called " Che Guevara des Donbass ". Vocativ.com pointed out that the outwardly attractive Tolstych played a central role in the propaganda of the separatists. Tolstych often appeared with his friendly militia leader Arsen Pavlov until his death.
