Pavlov served in the Russian army and was deployed in the Second Chechen War . Before entering the war in eastern Ukraine in April 2014, he lived in Rostov-on-Don and worked in a car wash . After conflicts with Russian law ( car theft and drunk driving ) and imminent imprisonment, he is said to have decided to fight in eastern Ukraine as a result. During the war in Ukraine, Pavlov was involved as commander in the Second Battle of Donetsk Airport and the Battle of Ilovajsk . In addition, Pavlov is said to have been in contact with the Russian right-wing extremist Vladimir Zhirinovsky at times. Pavlov often appeared in propaganda publications of the separatists with the pro-Russian militia leader Mikhail Tolstych , with whom he was close friends. Pavlov is charged with war crimes . In February 2015, Pavlov was placed on the European Union's sanctions list.

Pavlov died in the explosion of an explosive device in the elevator of his house, whereupon the leadership of the so-called Donetsk People's Republic declared a three-day mourning period (October 17-19).

War crimes allegations

The human rights organization Amnesty International accuses Pavlov and his unit "Sparta" of having committed several war crimes in the Second Battle of Donetsk Airport. These include the case of the Ukrainian soldier Ihor Branowyzkyj, who had previously been captured and allegedly murdered by Pavlov with two head shots on January 21, 2015 . Pavlov himself later admitted in an interview with Ukrainian journalists that he shot at least 15 captured Ukrainian soldiers. Amnesty collected evidence in a report dated May 22, 2015.
