history
The city was created in the 1930s as part of the development of the resource-rich north. Founded on August 21, 1929, initially as a small settlement called Tschibju (Чибью), on November 20, 1943 it received the status of a city under the name of Uchta (Ухта).
The new Uchta, built by prisoners exiled by armies, is a conglomerate of residential buildings, mixed with office and industrial buildings, spacious streets and squares, in keeping with the taste of then and later times. Later, the city became increasingly an industrial center, to which people moved voluntarily, as better wages were paid in the north. Even today the inhabitants of Ukhta have relatively good wages due to the booming oil and gas industry.
