Wuktyl ( komi and Russian Вуктыл , scientific transliteration Vuktyl ) is a city in the northwestern Russian republic of Komi with 12,356 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located in the foothills of the Northern Urals about 575 km northeast of the republic capital Syktywkar on the right bank of the Pechora , not far from the mouth of the eponymous tributary Wuktyl .
Wuktyl is administratively directly subordinate to the republic. The city has a sparsely populated area of 22,480 km².
The city is connected by a road with the city of Sosnogorsk, 230 km away, on the Pechora Railway .
history
Wuktyl was created in 1968 in connection with the development of a natural gas condensate field and received city rights in 1989.

Culture and sights
To the northeast of the city is the almost two million hectare Jugyd Wa National Park , whose administration is located in Wuktyl. The park, which was founded on April 23, 1994, has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the primeval forests of Komi since 1995 .
The remains of several prehistoric settlements have been discovered along the banks of the Pechora.
There is a local museum in the town of Podcherye .
economy
The main branch of the economy is natural gas production . Here begins the natural gas pipeline Northern Lights ( Severnoye sijanije ) Wuktyl- Ukhta - Torzhok . There is also timber industry and agriculture of local importance in the area.
