The place is about 6 km as the crow flies southwest of the center of the republic capital Syktywkar , which is actually immediately adjacent to this as a suburb. It is located not far from the left bank of the Syssola , which flows into the Wytegra at Syktywkar .
Wylgort is the administrative center of the Rajons Syktiwdinski and seat and only town in the rural community (selskoje posselenije) Wylgort.
A good half of the residents are Komi , almost 40% Russians .
history
The place was first mentioned in 1586 as a village with two courtyards, already under the current name with the approximate meaning "new place of residence" in Komi and the alternative Russian name Alexejewskaja. With several surrounding villages it grew into a larger settlement called Wylgort until the second half of the 17th century . In 1693 a church was built. In the middle of the 19th century, Wylgort was the largest town in the region in the north-east of what was then the Vologda governorate after Ust-Syssolsk, today's Syktywkar and Jarensk , now a significantly smaller village in the neighboring Arkhangelsk Oblast .
In 1935 Wylgort became the administrative seat of the Syktywdinski rajon, founded in 1929 (previously in Syktywkar, which was also independent of the rajon). From the 1960s over ten surrounding villages were incorporated into Wylgort, most recently in 1991 Joljaty, which is located directly on the Syssola, and Pitschipaschnja a few kilometers west of the center.
