Scheschart ( Russian Жешарт , Komi Зӧвсьӧрт , scientific transliteration Zövsërt ) is an urban-type settlement in the Komi republic in northern European Russia on the Vytschegda River . It has 8,561 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010). Scheschart owns a large wood processing factory, which is the main employer in town.
Until the 1930s there was only one village of the same name at the site of today's Scheschart settlement. In 1940 the construction of a sawmill began in the settlement, which is located in a wooded area. After the German attack on the Soviet Union, however, it was decided to build a factory for plywood panels instead, as these were needed for aircraft construction. However, the plant was not completed until after the war, in the summer of 1946. Over the next few decades, the plant was gradually enlarged, so that the factory was given the status of a combine in the 1970s .
In parallel with the growth of the plant, the city also expanded. New housing estates, kindergartens, a cinema and a cultural center were built. After the collapse of the Soviet Union , the Scheschart plywood combine was privatized and is now part of the Russian company United Panel Group .
The settlement has two general education schools and two kindergartens.
