Sosnogorsk ( Russian Сосногорск , Komi Сӧснагорт , scientific transliteration Sösnagort ) is a city in the northwestern Russian republic of Komi with 27,757 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located in the foothills of the Northern Urals about 350 km northeast of the republic capital Syktyvkar at the mouth of the Uchta in the Ishma , a left tributary of the Pechora . Sosnogorsk is only a few kilometers from the city of Ukhta .
Sosnogorsk is administratively directly subordinate to the republic.
The city lies on the Pechora railway Konoscha - Kotlas - Vorkuta (1568 km from Moscow ). A 161 km long branch line branches off here to Troizko-Pechorsk .
history
Sosnogorsk was created in 1939 when the Pechora railway was built, initially as Ischma and received city rights in 1955. In 1957 the city got its current name (from Russian sosna for pine ).
