Mikun ( Russian Микунь ) is a city in the northwestern Russian republic of Komi with 10,730 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located in the foothills of the Northern Urals about 100 km north of the republic capital Syktywkar , a few kilometers north of the Wytschegda , a right tributary of the Northern Dvina .
Mikun is located in the Ust-Wymski district .
The city lies on the Pechora railway Konoscha - Kotlas - Vorkuta (line kilometer 1313 from Moscow ). Here branch lines branch off to the republic capital Syktywkar and to the places Wendinga and Koslan, which are about 175 km northwest .
history
Mikun was created in 1937 when the Syktywkar – Koslan railway was built on the site of its planned intersection with the Pechora railway. A village of the same name (a popular nickname of Nikolai ) already existed nearby.
Several gulag camps were set up in and around the village , including the Ne special camp. 12, WodorasdelLag (1952-1953).
In 1959 the place received city rights.
