Nikolai is a variant of the ancient Greek name Nikolaos , the common German form of which is Nikolaus . Translated, the name means "victory of the people" or "victor of the people" ( nike : the victory (goddess); laos: the people ). He became known through the name of St. Nicholas , who was Bishop of Myra in the 4th century .
