Priit Nigula

Priit Nigula (born November 9 . Jul / 21st November  1899 greg. In St. Petersburg , Russian Empire ; †  9. June 1962 in Tallinn , Soviet Union ) was an Estonian conductor and pianist .

Life and music

Priit Nigula was born under the name Friedrich Nikolai in the Russian capital Saint Petersburg. From 1921 to 1923 he studied piano at the Moscow Conservatory with Alexander Goldenweiser .

From 1916 to 1923 Nigula worked at the opera houses of Yekaterinburg , Irkutsk and Moscow , among other things as concertmaster . Then he moved to Estonia . There he was from 1926 to 1942 pianist with the Estonian radio and conductor of the symphony orchestra of the Estonian radio.

From 1942 until his death in 1962 Nigula conducted at the Estonia Opera and Concert Hall in Tallinn. When its chief conductor at the time, Verner Nerep , fled to Sweden in 1944 from the occupation of Estonia by the Red Army , Nigula was appointed the new chief conductor. He held the office until 1951.

Awards

In 1957 Priit Nigula received the award of "Honored Artist of the Estonian SSR " ( Estonian Eesti NSV teeniline kunstnik ).
