Verner Nerep (born October 13 . Jul / 25. October  1895 greg. In Sargvere today Landsgemeinde Paide ; † 25. August 1959 in Stockholm , Sweden ) was an Estonian composer and conductor .

life and work

Verner Nerep came from a family of teachers. He attended schools in Järvakandi and Tallinn . Nerep completed his composition studies with Artur Kapp at the Tallinn Conservatory in 1927 (now the Estonian Music and Theater Academy ). He then studied piano with Artur Lemba . From 1933 to 1936, Nerep trained in other European countries.

Verner Nerep quickly made a musical career as a conductor, choir director and composer. From 1923 to 1936 he was employed as choirmaster at the Estonia Concert and Opera House in Tallinn. From 1933 to 1942 he was employed there as a conductor and, after the death of Raimund Kull, from 1942 to 1944 as chief conductor. From 1933 to 1944 Nerep was the conductor of the Estonian Radio Orchestra. and headed the X. and XI. Estonian Song Festival 1933 and 1938, one of the greatest awards in Estonian cultural life.

In 1944 Verner Nerep fled to Sweden from the Soviet occupation of Estonia. He was still musically active in Scandinavia. Among other things, Nerep directed the song festivals of the exiles living in Sweden in 1948 and 1954.

Numerous compositions are by Verner Nerep. The best known are the cantata Laul orjadele and the piece Kontsertvals for symphony orchestra. In addition, he composed many songs for choirs and stage music .
