Artur Kapp
Artur Kapp (* February 16 . Jul / 28. February 1878 greg. In Suure-Jaani ; † 14. January 1952 ) was an Estonian composer.
Life
Artur Kapp was born as the son of the schoolmaster and publicist Joosep Kapp (1833-1894). He received his first piano and organ lessons from his father.
From 1891, at the age of 13, Kapp studied organ with Louis Homilius (until 1898) and composition with Nikolai Andrejewitsch Rimski-Korsakow (until 1900) at the St. Petersburg Conservatory . He then worked as an organist and music teacher.
From 1904 to 1920 Kapp headed the music school in Astrakhan, Russia . During this time he often visited his Estonian homeland. After the revolution in Soviet Russia and the impending famine, Kapp returned to Estonia.
From 1920 to 1924 Kapp was a conductor at the Estonia Theater and professor of composition at the Estonian Academy of Music in Tallinn . In 1925 he was awarded the title of professor. His students included composers such as Evald Aav , Riho Päts , Enn Võrk , Edgar Arro and his son Eugen Kapp .
Kapp taught in Tallinn until 1939. After that he lived in his birthplace Suure-Jaani until his death.
Works
Kapp composed three symphonies , two organ concerts, a rhapsody for piano and orchestra, a concerto for clarinet and horn, a string sextet, organ pieces, an oratorio ( Hiiob , 1929), cantatas ( Paradiis ja Peri , 1899), choral music and songs .
His works are edited by the organist and composer Andres Uibo (* 1956).
Private life
Artur Kapp is the father of the Estonian composer Eugen Kapp (1908–1996). His nephew is the composer Villem Kapp (1913–1964).
