Enn Võrk

Enn Võrk (born March 1 . Jul / 14 March 1905 greg. In Vawkavysk , Belarus ; † 20th September 1962 in Tallinn ) was an Estonian composer and choir director.

life and work

Enn Võrk completed his composition studies at the Tallinn Conservatory in 1926 with Artur Kapp (1878–1952). From 1926 to 1933 he worked as a choir director and organist at the Tallinn Johanneskirche ( Estonian Jaani kirik ). He also taught music in Tallinn and Tartu , including from 1933 to 1945 at the University of Tartu .

From 1945 to 1950 Võrk was a lecturer in music theory at the Tallinn State Conservatory. For political reasons he was removed from his position by the Soviet occupation authorities and only rehabilitated in 1959. At times he lived underground. He spent the last years of his life in Rapla . From 1955 to 1960 he was the piano tuner of the Estonian Music Foundation ( Eesti Muusikafond ) and from 1960 to 1962 as a piano maker.

Enn Võrk has composed numerous choral works that are among the best known and most popular in Estonia . This includes Eesti Lipp (" The flag of Estonia ") based on a poem by Martin Lipp , which became a conspiratorial national anthem during the Soviet occupation. Other well-known pieces are the oratorio Vigilate (1957), the cantatas Laula, vaba rahvas (1949) and Sõbralik laul (1959), the ballad Ilu sõit (1934/1948) for mixed choir and chamber music works.
