Edgar Arro

Edgar Arro (born March 24, 1911 in Tallinn ; † December 24, 1978 there ) was an Estonian composer and organist.

Life

Edgar Arro completed his organ studies with August Topman in 1935 and his composition studies with Artur Kapp at the Tallinn Conservatory (now the Estonian Music and Theater Academy ). From 1936 to 1940 he worked as an organist for the Estonian State Radio . During the Second World War he was a member of various state art ensembles of the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic . From 1944 to 1952 Arro was a teacher at the Tallinn Music School. From 1952 to 1966 he was the responsible secretary of the Composers' Union of the Estonian SSR. From 1944 to 1978 he was also a lecturer in music theory at the Tallinn State Conservatory.

Edgar Arro is best known for his popular songs. His main works are the 56 Estonian Folk Tunes (published in full in the Eres Edition). He also wrote the operettas Rummu Jüri (1954) and Tuled kodusadamas (1958) together with Leo Normet . Arros organ works are internationally famous. He also composed numerous other pieces of music, choral songs, sacred works and film music.

In 1967 Arro received the title of People's Artist of the Estonian SSR. In 1948 and 1949, as well as in 1980 (posthumously), he was awarded Estonian state music awards.
