Leo Normet

Leo Normet (actually Leopold-Bruno Normet; born September 17, 1922 in Pärnu , †  December 27, 1995 in Tallinn ) was an Estonian composer, music theorist and music teacher.

life and work

Leo Normet was a member of the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic's state artistic ensemble during World War II . In 1950 he completed his composition studies at the Tallinn State Conservatory with Heino Eller . From 1948 to 1957 he was a lecturer at the Tallinn Music School and from 1954 at the Tallinn State Conservatory. In 1991 he received the title of professor.

Leo Normet became known to a larger audience primarily through his broadcasts on Estonian radio and television . His most famous musical compositions include the operas Valgus Koordis (1955, based on a story by Hans Leberecht ) and Pirnipuu (1973), the operettas Rummu Jüri (1954), Tuled kodusadamas (1958) and Stella Polaris (1961) as well as numerous song cycles .

Leo Normet was particularly interested in the music of Jean Sibelius , about whom he also published. In addition, he published other music theory works, including on oriental music.

Private life

Leo Normet was the husband of the Estonian writer Dagmar Normet (1921-2008).
