Riho Päts
Riho Päts (born June 26, 1899 in Tartu , † January 15, 1977 in Tallinn ) was an Estonian composer , choir director and music teacher .
Life
Riho Päts received his first music lessons in 1915 from Mart Saar (1882–1963). From 1923 he studied in Tallinn. In 1926 he completed his composition studies at the Tallinn Conservatory (now the Estonian Music and Theater Academy ) with Artur Kapp (1878–1952) and a year later his piano studies with Artur Lemba (1885–1963). He then worked as a music teacher in Haapsalu and Tallinn.
From 1930 to 1932 Päts was editor-in-chief of the music newspaper Muusikaleht . In addition, he made a name for himself as the leader of Estonian choirs. 1940/41 and from 1944 to 1950 Päts was a lecturer at the Tallinn State Conservatory. In 1950 he was arrested by the Soviet occupation authorities and had to do forced labor. Until the de-Stalinization in 1955 he was imprisoned in Soviet prison camps. Not until 1968 was he finally rehabilitated.
From 1956 to 1971 Päts was a lecturer at the Tallinn Pedagogical Institute , from 1962 with the title of professor.
Riho Päts was particularly committed to the renewal of school music and the promotion of choral singing. In addition, he composed numerous pieces that take up themes from Estonian folk music and folk tradition.

In addition, Riho Päts wrote numerous stage music, pieces for choir and piano as well as children's songs. He also authored monographs on music topics, song books for school lessons, and music books. The books and ideas of Carl Orff (1895–1982) were the model for his music pedagogical work .
