Rudolf Tobias
Rudolf Tobias (born May 17, jul. / 29. May 1873 greg. In Selja , island Hiiumaa , † 29. October 1918 in Berlin ) was an Estonian composer and organist .
Life
Tobias studied at the St. Petersburg Conservatory a . a. with Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov . During this time he wrote his cantata Johannes von Damascus , as well as the oratorio "Des Jona Sendung" for soloists, choir, organ and large orchestra (first performance on November 26th, 1909 in the St. Andrew's Church in Leipzig ). In 1904 Tobias went to Tartu , in 1910 to Berlin, where he first worked as a lecturer and later as a professor at the Royal University of Music . In 1914 he took on the Prussian citizenship. In 1918 he died of pneumonia and was buried in the Wilmersdorf cemetery.
In 1992 his body was transferred to Kullamaa and reburied.
From 1994 until it was replaced by the euro, the image of Rudolf Tobias adorned the front of the 50 kroner note.
