Selja (Hiiumaa)

Selja is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the rural municipality of Hiiumaa (until 2017: rural municipality Käina ). It is located on the second largest Estonian island Hiiumaa (German Dagö ). Selja is not to be confused with Emmaste-Selja , which is also on the island of Hiiumaa and was called Selja until 2017.
Selja has 66 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2011).
Rudolf Tobias Museum

The historic sexton's house from the nearby town of Käina is located in the village . The Estonian composer Rudolf Tobias was born there in May 1873 into an extended family. He received his first music lessons from his parents. His father, Johannes Tobias, was a sexton and master organ builder. The family left Hiiumaa in 1885 when Rudolf Tobias was twelve years old.
Today there is an extensive museum about his life and work in the house. It has been a branch of the Hiiumaa muuseum since 1973 .
"Widow's house"
Near Selja, on the road between the villages of Emmaste and Käina, was the so-called “widow's house”. It served as a retirement home for the widows of deceased pastors and their frail relatives.
A mental institution was later housed in the building. The doctor and microbiologist Endel Türi (1930–2007), who himself came from Hiiumaa, began treating himself there for the first time in 1959 with healing mud from the Bay of Käina. With Türi's departure to the State University of Tartu , the spa was closed. The house was later largely demolished.
