Pühalepa-Harju (German Harjo ) is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the rural municipality Hiiumaa (until 2017: rural municipality Pühalepa ). It is located on the second largest Estonian island Hiiumaa (German Dagö ). Until the reestablishment of the rural community Hiiumaa, the place was called "Harju" and was renamed to differentiate itself from Harju , as both are now in the same rural community.

Description of the place

Pühalepa-Harju is four kilometers from Emmaste .

The place was first mentioned in 1565. Today it has 10 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2011).

The two historic windmills in the village are worth seeing. They were built in 1781 and 1892 respectively.

Personalities

The town's most famous son is the popular Estonian children's author Julius Oengo . He was born in Pühalepa-Harju in 1901. Oengo was executed by the Soviet occupation authorities in 1941 .
