Tubala is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the rural municipality Hiiumaa (until 2017: rural municipality Pühalepa ). It is located on the second largest Estonian island Hiiumaa (German Dagö ).

Population and location

Tubala has 79 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2011). It is located six kilometers southeast of the island's capital, Kärdla .

The Nuutri River ( Nuutri jõgi ) flows through the village .

"Anchor of Hiiumaa"

Tubala is best known for an elongated and nailed pole. According to legend, the wood anchors the island on the seabed and prevents Hiiumaas from drifting away. The post was restored in 2003. Every year on July 28th new nails are hammered in. They are named after the patrons who financially contributed to the preservation of Hiiumaa's culture.

There is a boulder in the immediate vicinity . It has a diameter of twenty meters and its height is 3.5 m.
