Salinõmme

Salinõmme (German Sallinömm ) is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the rural municipality Hiiumaa (until 2017: rural municipality Pühalepa ). It is located on the second largest Estonian island Hiiumaa (German Dagö ).
Description and history
Salinõmme today has 29 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2011). It is five kilometers south of Suuremõisa .
The village is located on the peninsula of the same name ( Salinõmme poolsaar ). To the east lies the Bay of Salinõmme ( Salinõmme laht ), to the west the Book of Soonlepa ( Soonlepa laht ). The juniper characterizes the natural landscape. At the end of the 19th century, the peninsula was still a small island, which was eventually connected to the island of Hiiumaa through the natural uplift of the land.
The place was first mentioned in 1565 under the name Salomäe by . During the Swedish rule of Hiiumaa from 1582 to 1594, sea salt was extracted there - albeit on a modest scale, as the salt content is not very high. The name of the village is also derived from the word " Saline ".
Hiiumaa Island Reserve
The administrative center for the Hiiumaa island reserve, created in 1971, is in Salinõmme . An observation tower was built for ornithologists . There is also a small fishing port and a guest house in Salinõmme.
