history

After the conclusion of the German-Soviet non-aggression pact of August 23, 1939, the Republic of Estonia , which had been added to the Soviet sphere of interest, had to consent to the stationing of Red Army troops on its territory. On October 19, 1939, the first Soviet military arrived on Hiiumaa Island.

The area near the village of Määvli was intended as a target practice area. At that time the place consisted of four homesteads with 34 people. On July 15, 1940, a large forest fire broke out in the area as a result of the gunnery and bombing exercises. Thirty square kilometers of forest were destroyed. The village had to be abandoned.
