Mudaste is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the rural community Hiiumaa (2013 to 2017: rural community Hiiu , before that rural community Kõrgessaare ) on the second largest Estonian island Hiiumaa (German Dagö ).

Description and history

Mudaste (Swedish Mutas ) has ten inhabitants (as of December 31, 2011). The place is ten kilometers northwest of the island's capital Kärdla ( Kertel ).

The village was first mentioned in 1591 under the name Moddas . The place was inhabited by Estonian Swedes for centuries . In 1781 she was deported to the Ukraine by the Russian Tsarina Katharina like over 90% of the Swedish-speaking population of Hiiumaas, where in 1782 they founded the Gammalsvenskby colony .
