Hiiu (Hiiu vald) is a former municipality in the northwest of the second largest Estonian island Hiiumaa . It belonged administratively to the district of Hiiu (Hiiu maakond) .

history

The municipality was established in October 2013 when the island's capital Kärdla and the rural municipality of Kõrgessaare merged into a new municipal administrative unit. The seat of the administration was in the city of Kärdla.

There was no common land connection between Kärdla and the other villages in the municipality. They were separated by the rural community of Pühalepa .

In 2017 all parishes on Hiiumaa merged to form the new rural parish Hiiumaa .
