Hirmuste (Hiiumaa)

Hirmuste is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the rural municipality Hiiumaa (2013 to 2017: rural municipality Hiiu , before that rural municipality Kõrgessaare ) on the second largest Estonian island Hiiumaa (German Dagö ).
Description and history
Hirmuste has twelve residents (as of December 31, 2011). The place is located in the northwest of the Kõpu peninsula ( Kõpu poolsaar ) not far from the Baltic Sea beaches .
The place was mentioned for the first time in 1565 as an infeed point . Hinrich and Bengtt Harmanson are named as owners, to whom the toponym probably goes back. 1576 is the place Hermeste , 1599 Hermista , 1798 Hirmust . The folk etymology translates the name of the village Hirmuste küla literally as “ village of horrors”.
The Hirmuste protected area ( Hirmuste hoiuala ), established in 2005, is located near the site . It has an area of 38.3 hectares. The area serves to protect the endangered flora, especially meadow foxtail and juniper .
