chapel
Esiküla is best known for the island's Evangelical Lutheran chapel . The single-nave church was probably built in the 18th century. A previous wooden building was probably in the same place as early as the 16th century.
Today's stone church with its traditional thatched roof was fundamentally redesigned in 1801. It was renovated and rededicated in 1992/93. The Gothic-style tower is located above the main entrance .
Numerous members of the noble Baltic German family Stackelberg are buried in the cemetery next to the chapel . They owned the Kassari estate.
The ancestors of the poet Debora Vaarandi (1916–2007), the grandparents of the Estonian poet Marie Under (1883–1980) and the actor Olev Eskola (1914–1990) are buried in the church. The Estonian land manager Villem Tamm (1836–1915) is also buried in the cemetery. He was the model for the artist Johann Köler for his famous fresco of Christ in the Karlskirche in Tallinn .
