Kuriste is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the rural municipality Hiiumaa (until 2017: rural municipality Käina ). It is located on the second largest Estonian island Hiiumaa (German Dagö ).

Population

Kuriste has 13 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2011).

The town's landmark is the Kuriste Orthodox Church of the Nativity, the largest of the four original Orthodox churches on Hiiumaa. It is actually in the area of ​​the neighboring village of Taterma .

Between 1884 and 1886, during the Russification of Estonia, numerous local farmers converted to the Russian Orthodox faith .

The church was built in 1888/89 according to plans by the architects I. Dmitrijewski and K. Nyman. It was inaugurated in July 1890 in the presence of the Tsarist Governor of Estonia, Sergei Shachowskoi . The iconostasis is historic .

Today the house of God is the only Orthodox church on Hiiumaa where services are still held regularly. The parish is subordinate to the Estonian Apostolic Orthodox Church ( Eesti Apostlik-Õigeusu Kirik ).

Next to the church is the village cemetery.
