Kaigutsi is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the rural municipality Hiiumaa (until 2017: rural municipality Käina ). It is located on the second largest Estonian island Hiiumaa (German Dagö ).

Description and history

Kaigutsi (German Kaukutse ) has 41 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2011).

In 1591 the place was mentioned as Kaickotz , in 1796 it is recorded as Kaigust , in 1931 it was called Kaikaotsa .

Kaarel Tischler-Ulpus

The most famous son of the place is the Estonian joke teller Kaarel Tischler-Ulpus (1862–1939). He lived on the Hansu talu farm belonging to Kaigutsi . His father-in-law was Miku Tooma, whose farm Miku talu Tischler-Ulpus later took over.

Known as "Miku-Kaarel", the joker made a name for himself throughout Estonia with his ironic puns and sharp-tongued humor. Since 2008 a wooden memorial in Kaigutsi commemorates the humorist
