Kuri (Hiiumaa)

Kuri is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the rural municipality Hiiumaa (until 2017: rural municipality Pühalepa ). It is located on the second largest Estonian island Hiiumaa (German Dagö ), directly on the Baltic coast .

Kuri has 39 inhabitants today (as of December 31, 2011). The village is located 12 kilometers southeast of the island's capital Kärdla (German Kertel ).
Orthodox Church
In the last decades of the 19th century, the tsarist empire intensified its Russification policy on Hiiumaa as well. The propagation of the Orthodox faith was particularly successful in the area. Between 1885 and 1887 over a thousand members of the Evangelical Lutheran parish of Pühalepa converted to the Russian Orthodox religion.
During this time three new Orthodox churches were built on the island, one of them in Kuri. In 1889 the Ascension Church was completed there. It was consecrated a year later by the Russian Orthodox Bishop of Riga . In 1913 the community had 1,300 believers.
The historicist building was planned by the architects I. Dmitrijewski and P. Knüpffer. It was crowned by five domes and a bell tower. A similarly built church is on Hiiumaa in the village of Kuriste .
In 1952 the church was closed during the Soviet occupation of Estonia. It was then used by the Red Army as a military camp. Today only the ruins remain. There are no longer any Orthodox believers in Kuri.
A parish school was built next to the church . Also worth seeing is the Kuri Orthodox cemetery, which is now under the Estonian Apostolic Orthodox Church ( Eesti Apostlik Õigeusu Kirik ).
