Õngu is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the rural municipality of Hiiumaa (until 2017: rural municipality Emmaste ). It is located on the second largest Estonian island Hiiumaa (German Dagö ), directly on the Baltic coast .

Description and history

Õngu (German Onego ) has 30 inhabitants today (as of December 31, 2011). It is located 24 kilometers southwest of the island's capital, Kärdla ( Kertel ).

The river Õngu ( Õngu jõgi ) flows through the village . It has its source in the moorland in the center of Hiiumaa Island.

A water mill has been mentioned for the place since 1563. In 1583 the village was called Ennige . In 1798 the village and mill are recorded under the name Öngo .

economy

The fish farm OÜ Õngu Noorkalakasvandus is located in Õngu today . The company specializes in rearing sea ​​trout .
