Kõpu is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the rural community Hiiumaa (2013 to 2017: rural community Hiiu , before that rural community Kõrgessaare ) on the second largest Estonian island Hiiumaa (German Dagö ).

Description and history

Kõpu (German Köppo ) has 35 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2011). The place is located on the peninsula of the same name ( Kõpu poolsaar ).

The village of Koppoby was first mentioned in 1565 .

On the so-called Kaplimägi ( Kapellenberg ) stood an Evangelical-Lutheran wooden chapel built after 1641 . She belonged to the parish of Reigi, 23 km away . There are no more traces of her left. In 1887 a wooden church with 150 seats was built. The tin roof was her undoing when lightning struck on August 12, 1942 and the church burned down.

Orthodox Church

The former Orthodox Church. The building now serves as a cultural center.

In 1907/1908 an Orthodox church was built in Kõpu as part of the Russification of Estonia . It served as a meeting house and school building at the same time . The farmer Johannes Küttim donated the property to the church for the construction after the project threatened to fail due to resistance from the local Baltic German nobility.

The church was consecrated in June 1909. It also served as the pope's residence .

With the Soviet occupation of Estonia, worship in Kõpu was banned in 1941. The house was then empty and fell into disrepair. Villagers claim to have buried the church bell in the forest and hidden the iconostasis . The two objects have not been found until today.

In 1957 the building was transformed into the local culture house. The small onion dome was removed.

When Estonian regained independence, the rural community returned the building to the Estonian Apostolic Orthodox Church ( Eesti Apostlik-Õigeusu Kirik ) in 1996. As there are almost no Orthodox believers left in Kõpu, the church and parish signed a contract in 2004. After that, the EAÕK leaves the house free for cultural and community events. The neoclassical building is well preserved today. It is a listed building.

Boarding school

In 1873 the first school was founded in Kõpu. The building from 1868 now houses a state boarding school for disabled children. The historic school building is supplemented by a new building from 1998.

On the Kaplimägi , the second highest elevation in Hiiumaa at 63 meters, there is today a wooden structure jokingly known as the “Eiffel Tower”. It was created in the 1990s on a private initiative. The top platform offers a wide view of the peninsula and the Baltic Sea .

nature

The Kõpu Nature Reserve ( Kõpu looduskaitseala ) , which was created in its current form in 2007, extends between the villages of Kõpu and Mägipe . It has an area of 3,063.8 hectares.

There are numerous boulders in the area . Best known is Hiiumaa's second largest boulder, the Kõpu Suurkivi or Lepistepao rahn . It has a circumference of 28.4 meters and a height of 5.3 meters.

Archaeologists have unearthed numerous graves from the Late Neolithic and Bronze Age near Kõpu since 1928 .
