Kidaste is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the rural municipality Hiiumaa (2013 to 2017: rural municipality Hiiu , before that rural municipality Kõrgessaare ) on the second largest Estonian island Hiiumaa (German Dagö ).

Description and location

Kidaste (Swedish Kiddas ) has 22 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2011).

The village is nine kilometers west of the island's capital Kärdla ( Kertel ). It was first mentioned in 1591 under the name Kyddas .

Kitas-Irja

For centuries, mainly Swedish-speaking residents of Hiiumaas lived in the place . They were known for their love of freedom, their pride and their insubordination.

The most famous son of the place is the Estonian-Swedish farmer Jöran Jakobson, who enjoyed great popularity among the local population under the name Kitas-Irja. Within thirty years he traveled more than ten times to the court in Stockholm as the spokesman for the Hiiumaa Swedes , in order to take legal action against violations of legal rights, high taxes, trade bans and the arbitrary rule on the part of local landowners. It was first heard from the advisers of the Swedish King Charles XI. Subsequent interventions, however, were inconclusive. Jöran Jakobson also drew the wrath of the local squire Axel Julius De la Gardie (1637–1710).

After abandoning the gauntlet , Jöran Jakobson was declared outlawed. He then hid in the woods of Hiiumaa for more than twelve years. Around 1692 his track is lost.

In 1721 Hiiumaa, like all of Estonia, became part of the Russian Empire . In 1781, the Russian government deported almost all Swedes on the island to the Ukraine for alleged insubordination, where they founded the Gammalsvenskby colony in 1782 . Many died on the way. This also ended the Swedish settlement of Kidaste.
